iPhone apps: tools for tradesmen

Tool up Tradies

Now, we’re not sure of the popularity or uptake of iPhones on building sites. Your co-workers might just give you too much grief to start with.

It’s also hard to imagine such an expensive gadget lasting long on site – it’s just not hardy enough!

But would it be handy on site?

We look at the features that *might* make it ok for site:

  • Mobile phone: It could replace your existing mobile phone (like no sh*t)
  • MP3 player: Keep the music playing by replacing your MP3 player or radio
  • Internet: You could check the web for best priced tools (like eBay v Bunnings), best priced local Friday afternoon drinks etc
  • GPS: And the iPhone has GPS which can help you get from job site to job site quickly.

But these are features we’ve seen in other mobile phones… so what’s the iPhone got that others don’t?

iPhone Applications…

There is now over 3,000 applications for iPhone (and iPod touch) in the iTunes store.

For example, just check out this WIRED post: Five iPhone applications to replace your tools

Think -

  • spirit level
  • tape measure
  • caliper…

(I like some of the suggested applications and uses in comments too!)

ShakeForCharity has developed a must have application for tradespeople. This application takes your before and after photos of the work completed and publishes them to the news feed of your clients Facebook. For your client this is all done at the click of one button. It can even be sold as a value add to your services. With millions of people on Facebook, chances are your client is a member. Go to http://www.shakeforcharity.com/reference_builder to learn more.

I run a hairdressing business and recently tried this application with my iPhone. I kid you not within minutes of publishing the before and after photos I received a phone call for another booking. I did not even get a chance to receive payment for the hair cut when I was booking another.

I am very happy with this application. Thanks for the advice.

My company has just created an Iphone app called iMobee. It is linked to our online mobile workforce management system called GeoOP. You can add, update, edit, allocate jobs from the office or in the field. All staff can be added so all jobs can be updated in real time.

This means you know exactly what your company is doing when with all the information on hand. Go to http://www.geoop.com for more info.
